So you can trust Microsoft! They only want to make your computing experience more pleasant. Then why do they want a list of all the programs you are running?

If you can’t understand why they want this list and you are running Windows XP then don’t run Microsoft's update utility. But wait doesn’t it come preinstalled to do that?
